String Theory Jiu Jitsu is a NY-based gym specializing in teaching high-level technique to children and adults. I engineered a bold, vintage-inspired identity that captures the unique concept of "The Puppet Master"—the idea that precise movements control the outcome of every match.

Situational Awareness
Most combat sport brands lean into aggression or generic "fight" tropes. String Theory needed to communicate sophistication, maturity, and a cerebral approach to Jiu Jitsu that would appeal to both technical practitioners and parents of prospective students.
03. The Core Problem
Problem Definition
Developing a "Puppet Master" concept without falling into cartoony or fantasy traps. The challenge was to keep the visuals grounded in vintage woodcut aesthetics while referencing the scientific concept of vibration and connection inherent in the gym's name.

Risk & Trade-offs
The identity had to work seamlessly across massive gym wall graphics, traditional Gi embroidery, and digital social media channels. The chromatic palette was strictly limited to black, white, and grey to emphasize the mature, sophisticated feel.

Success Criteria
Establish a "Striking & Original" mark that differentiates String Theory from competitors. Success was defined by high memorability scores and a visual system that feels like a prestigious, established institution rather than a new gym.

Vintage Sophistication.
A woodcut-influenced, stippled illustration style was chosen to ground the cosmic concept in physical history. The "String Theory" halo represents both the scientific portal and the aura of expertise, while the abstract mascot in a traditional Gi ensures immediate sport recognition.
